Bert D: For Debbie--her dad had a procedure this week to remove a cyst from bladder...waiting for test results if cancerous or not.

Anonymous: Father God, I pray You continue to heal my body to complete restoration! In Jesus' name! May my mind focus on You alone and not on worry.

Jim & Susan O: We praise Him for great health for Susan, the triplets & me---especially as the children celebrate their 11th birthday on Tuesday. We pray to be available to do His will and be receptive to His miracles every day.

Isabella: I prey that thous pore people wont be pore. Amen!

Cp: Praise, praise and more praise! God you are good! Father, I pray my kids will fall hopelessly in love with you and develop a relationship with you that is so deep and wide that their foundation will not crack when the pressures of life arises. My dad Wayne Sellin is in the hospital struggling to walk again. Also pray for my daughter Linda Rose to get the job she interviewed for this week. Also for her boyfriend Chris to get a new job too.

Anonymous: I realize in the heat of the battle, I turn to my perfectionism for protection and to offset mis trust and disappointment in others. I use my work ethic to try to out run everything and I injure those around me that I love. But most of all I don't enjoy the for the gift that they are and that leads to a cycle of guilt.

Ben H: Struggle with immorality

Shaun H: Pray for my new group of men meeting on Monday mornings at my home with the internet of focus on Christ. His purpose in our marriages.

David/Mary V: Prayers are requested for Isaiah. He has been sick several times in the pst few months. We pray for God to heal him completely and keep him well!

Jim O: Father God- Thank you for the WISDOM provided by YOU ungrudgingly and generously for James in His epistle. My request is for my wife Susan and I to do your will. Today and every day.

Cp: For health and complete wellness for me and my entire family! And for a supernatural miracle of breakthrough for my high choloesterol that is seeming to be "hereditary" at this point. Dr. wants to put me on statins - I do not wish to take more medicine if I do not have to. There are so many conflicting opinions on statins. I will begin taking a few new "natural" options this week. Father God, lead me to your answer! In Jesus' name- Amen.

Marcus R: Needs prayer for healing for the bottom of his heels and numbness in his feet, I stretch and feel temporary relief. t is very painful, I need a miracle, I expect God to heal me. I expect a miracle!!!!!!

Anonymous: Prayer for part-time work during the week. Can be contract assignments. Ask the Lord to guide me and give me discernment for the opportunities He places before me. Ask for protection from the enemy. Ask for the confidence and courage to step out of my comfort zone.

Also that I can identify and sell new business this week and that God will bring me a new friend that i can trust completely. Let your rain wash me clean, as white as snow. Kerry & Eli P: Huge praise to Jesus that my family 7-day Mom's 70th Bday trip went great! The entire family came - all 13 of us- Mom loved it! Lots of work and prep went into it and the Lord completely blessed it.

SLC: Lord, we pray for a worship leader and the funds to support someone full-time. We only want the one you have hand picked for Summit Life. The waiting is so hard, yet we know you love us and desire more than anything for us to worship you with every part of our being. Even if that means to give you praise and honor week after week without a musician standing in front of us. We thank you for the "not now" and for the "not knowing." And we continue to wait expectantly for the "and suddenly" miracle in this ministry area and how you will bring it about.

Cp: For a neighbors; the Cohens. Their little boy Ethan had a seizure last night at 8pm. He is 5 years old. They took him to Children's Legacy and brain scan and blood work came back negative. He is adopted and has a long list of immune issues and the mom is very afraid. I prayed last night before bed that God would provide a way for me to speak to her. Today when I returned from our church meeting, God gave me that opportunity to spend time with her out front and I was able to encourage her through what we went through with Grayson. God, bring her peace and stability throughout all of this. Show her truth by your spirit. Help her to live in the now and not in the past and that Ethan did not die and he is still alive. Show her the next steps in this process. And most of all, demolish the fear that surrounds her. In Jesus' name, Amen.

November 29 Requests:

Cindy T: Pray for me to be able to move forward and really start living my life to the fullest, and that Skyler or anything else will not drag me down. That I may be able to realize and live in the fullest sense the destiny that God has called me to and that all my needs would be met in abundance. That I could open up my heart to love in new and fresh ways.

Cindy T for Skyler T: He has chosen to live in the wilderness in Hot Springs AR again - please pray for a miracle of deliverance from many evil spirits controlling him, a miracle for healing of his mind (he isn't taking his meds) and his jaw (TMJ) that has really affected him as well. That he could have a mighty encounter with God in the wilderness that he cannot ever deny. That he would enter in a new season of independence, freedom, and responsibility for his own life and his needs.

Carly L: Lord, may I not reason my heart's desire away.

Jeff D: My best friend is a 2nd lieutenant with the Army Rangers, he is training his platoon in the California desert. Please pray for his safety and for cohesion with his men/women. My other best friend has an eating disorder and is starving to death. Don't know what to do. Please pray for his health.

November 20 Requests:

Cindy T: I need prayer for a business matter that I need to be resolved in my favor. Also that my son Skyler, who has graduated from his sober living house, will continue to grow as a man and continue to be healed and see his life purpose clearly.

Anonymous: I pray that God give me the spirt and gift of forgiveness as my marriage comes to a legal ending- to use discretion and fair judgment with financial resources. Brook F: for Waylon- willingness and hope for my husband, Waylon. For restoration and freedom in our marriage. A transformation that only God can do.

Cindy T: Pray for resolution and justice for a business matter that I am having to fight in court also wisdom and discernment for how to handle it and protect my business. Also for new business to come in, and for new opportunities in my business. Pray for Sklyer too; that he will continue his healing process and have success with his college classes and break the fear of success and fear of failures in his life. Pray for my daughter Laina too for wisdom, healing in her heart, and blessings for her too.

Cp: Tennis coach Donna S. will be going through blood donor process next week in Tennessee for her brother's bone marrow replacement.

Cp: PRAISE, PRAISE & MORE PRAISE!!! 3 years ago tonight we were preparing for one of the most impossible situations we had ever been faced with; a full craniotomy on our sweet Grayson's brain to "try" and remove "part" of a rapidly growing brain stem pilocytic astrocytoma tumor. A surgery that was scheduled to take 6-8 hours and at best, 75% removed. Knowing that they would have screws imbedded in his head connected to a table was more than I could bear. But God gave us peace in the journey - and we were carried through that day, Oct. 28, 2008. The news the next day was straight from the throne - a miracle had occurred. Actually "3" miracles: 1) The surgery only took 4 hours, not 6-8. 2) His eye sight or speech was not affected even though they were almost certain he would have some damage. 3) 95% of the tumor was removed instead of the 75% they had hoped. We have woken up 3 years later and still do not understand how it all happened...but by the grace of God. Fitting that his name is "Grayson" (God's grace) Today he is a healthy 11 year old boy full of life and a compassionate heart and a heart after God and His righteousness. We continue to pray for God's purposes for his life using this event as a testimony for generations to come. Please pray for a clear scan which is coming up on Nov. 9th. We are praying that the scans will move to every year instead of every 6 months. Father, we give thanks for your healing hand - our Jehovah Rophe. In Jesus name. Amen

Carly L: My son, Campbell is having tubes put in his ears again. And his adenoids removed. Surgery is this week. He will have to be intibated. I pray for his safety and quick recovery. In Jesus's name.

Carly L: I am having internal conflict over y ex-husband. I do not know if I should reconcile. I'm scared. But I believe in the God of the impossible! I am willing! In Jesus's name! Amen

Matt: I was praying for sale that happened. I am believing God for homes to sell and clients. I am asking God to continue to bless our business.

Melissa M: We have money to tithe on! We wrote 2 contracts this week!

Panz K: My friend, Renee, from Louisiana is at Baylor Med Center in downtown Dallas having brain tumor surgery today. The procedure will take six to eight hours. Lift up her and her husband, Thomas, to the throne today.

Renee is the church pianist. She and her siblings grew up with my brother, cousins, and myself so the "family" ties run deep. Would appreciate your prayers for Jehovah-rapha - the great Physician - to be in the operating room. Plus comfort and peace for Renee as well as traveling mercies for the friends traveling back to Louisiana on Friday.

Kimberly L.- Olivia has just seen her father since April 19th. She seems happy and all appears to be well, but I can't ask and don't know for sure. Please pray for healing, hope, and restoration of father and child. Thank you.

Jan O.- Thank you for all the blessing of family and friends. We are blessed with good health, physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.

Melissa M.- Grateful for my peace and health in these times. Very tired at the end of every day but so happy for life and that we are getting out of bed and experiencing life.

This past Sunday, the entire congregation had a very special time of dedicating something to our Lord.... something every person has had before. Something that if given fuel, can eat away at any man. Something acidic and powerful if given the right ammunition: Fear.

But praise be to our Lord, the One "who did not give us a spirit of fear or timidity!" Every person in the church wrote the same prayer request... "I will be healed of fear!"

So Father... our most High Daddy... Abba. We cry out to Your heavenly dwelling, in which we are ALREADY seated next to You, heal this people of Yours from all fear! From all dread of what may happen! And from the past failures we all have incurred! You are our refuge. You alone are wise. And to You alone... we deliver these requests. For You alone are worthy to be called God.

In Jesus, the Messiah's Name, we agree and pray... Amen.

Cindy T.- I really need a new apartment or house. My current place has too many memories and zaps my energy. Please pray for God to lead me and show me where I need to be... close to my office downtown.

Anonymous- For the Holy Spirit to reign at Pantheon as He holds something in us. May our two new employees see Christ in us and transform them. Praise for restored health in Christian.

8.21.11 Who are you? Finding your identity

Week 3

Xchanging your identity

Our identity centers on our desire for love. Because of our desire to be cherished we embark into sacrifice – believing that through sacrifice we can earn the love and favor of our Father (and others).

Everyone is born in sin and into a sinful existence in this world – we use the faulty godless systems to assess our worth and value.

Instead of assessing our value as heirs to the King – we gauge our value by how we feel – usually through a system of measurements found in the world.

“How you feel has little bearing on who you are”

When a person Xchanges their life with Christ – they are given a new identity.

- The Old self does not exist – you are a new creation – a new being – and exist in a new realm beyond the systems of this world.

“In the new system it is not what we do that determines who we are it is who we are that determines what we do.”

“In the world we act in order to be loved… in the kingdom we are loved and that is why we act.”

The bible says – “we are seated with Christ in heavenly places.”

The book of Ephesians tells us that – “In Christ we have obtained an inheritance and are sealed with the Holy Spirit who guarantees our inheritance until we acquire possession of it.” (Eph 1:11,13-14)

- In Christ a believer is declared “not guilty”.

- In Christ sin no longer has power over you (Romans 6:11-13)

- In Christ you now have hope and peace (Ephesians 2:12-22)

Let’s understand this Xchange and our new identity:

1 Thess 5:23 – “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

- 3 parts – spirit, soul body

Genesis 1:27 – formed in God’s image (what was Gods image… spirit) Genesis 1:2 – “and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

Man was then given a body Genesis 2:27 and began living a physical existence.

Originally we were designed to live SPIRIT-SOUL-BODY

Adam and eve were naked and unashamed…

After the fall there was a SHIFT – man became aware of the physical and it dominated his existence.

- Genesis 3:9-10 – “…I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked…”

So now instead of the SPIRIT leading our soul (mind, will and emotions) – the BODY (physical) takes the dominant role.

The Xchange that occurs when a person accepts Christ as LORD and Savior is that our SPIRIT recaptures it’s rightful position. Satan attempts to deceive us into believing that our value is still attached to the PHYSICAL.

Satan wants you to believe that you are still an orphan and so begins the process of overcoming the orphan spirit.

There is a maturity that only occasion and revelation can give to the life of a Christ follower. And while being grown up as a Christian is not necessarily a matter of time there are points of maturity that we see revealed to us through Scripture.

As we understand our new identity - we grow up in faith… as we grow up in faith we grow up in love.

Galatians 4:1-7

Paul is speaking against the OT law and its regulations. He is contending for the true doctrine of grace. In chapter 4 he uses the illustration of maturing into faith – and by doing so he gives us a blueprint of how one is to mature into the love.

According to what Paul instructs us in Galatians there are three essential “levels” that each of us have the chance to progress through as we grow up.

Bondservant – Son – Heir

We enter into God’s family through “regeneration” and have the benefits of God’s family through adoption. But those “benefits” came with a price – and while the gift is free – there are some things that we are asked to implement as we grow.

The first level in the process is “slave” or “bond-servant” – from the word “dou=lov” transliterated to “doulos” - meaning ‘one who gives themselves up to another’s will, devoted to another to the disregard of one’s own interests.’

Literally Paul is talking about being a slave to the law –

Jesus did not do away with the law – he fulfilled it – and while the principal remains – the consequence is done away with.

It is within this level that you learn your “ABC’s” – you establish the foundation of faith. These are the “elementary principals” of the religious experience.

At this level you recognize that you are not in charge of getting your needs met and the beginning of “dependence” is planted.

- This is the level that you want to rush through – it’s not what you would consider “fun”.

· Repeating the “ABC’s” can get boring after a while.

- Yet, it is within the process of understanding what it means to be a servant that a foundation is built.

- This level is a life that recognizes that you are not the most important person in a relationship. That there is someone “greater” than you and they are the one who calls the play.

- You learn that you must yield to the needs of the ‘master’ or the overseer of your life.

- It is a level in which you learn to value needs and demands that are seemingly not for your benefit.

- Being a servant is a breaking free from “self” and the tendency to have little regard for the “needs” of the people around you… breaking free from the idea, “It’s about me…”

- At the level of servant you begin to understand that you have been liberated (by Jesus), but that deliverance is not for your benefit.

It is at this level that you (Proverbs 19:20) - “Listen to advice and accept instruction so that you may gain wisdom in the future.”

- This is a level in which you obey out of duty to the people that have been placed as guardians and managers over you.

- This is a level in which you obey the instructions of others and begin to adopt a system in which you follow standards and principals that may not be important to you.

- The adoption of “outside” principals teaches you how to value and think about things that are “beyond” your frame of reference.

- This is a level within which you establish the discipline of “delayed gratification”.

- It demands that you yield to the demands of the master, FIRST, even when we do not know the plan.

John 15:15 – “… for the servant does not know what his master is doing…”

- You learn how to sacrifice – you learn how to give – how to help – how to respond to the external world.

- You learn how to give out of your own place of need.

- You are venerable to the commands of the master.

- You begin to understand that protection and provision are beyond your control.

- CAUTION: It can be a place within which you get hurt; and because of harm done by poor masters we promise ourselves, “I will never get hurt like that again!”

- It is a level in which we learn how to manipulate circumstances to protect – so that you are no longer at the mercy of a master

NOTE: Because of harm done by others – this is the level within which a spirit of “defiance” (instead of meekness) can take root.

NOTE: Within this level a spirit of “Suspicion” (instead of trust) can occur.

NOTE: This is also the place where “Standards” and rules can become your God (instead of impossibility through Christ).

- The servant phase is where I learn how to trust.

- I don’t get to understand the “why” in life. I simply learn to obey “because…”

- It is at the servant level that “mystery” must be embraced.

This level establishes your “path” either to life or to death…

“Proverbs 10:17 – “Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life…”

- But, you need to master the servant phase – you cannot be ready for the next level.

The level of Son; Galatians 4:4-5 – “God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”

You might be asking “when” does a person become a “son”? – in keeping with the context of the text;

- Under Roman law the age of maturity for a child was set by the father.

- So depending upon the servant’s character is when the Father “promotes” them into son-ship.

Luke 15 – the prodigal son… or rather the tremendous Father:

- At this level you “come to yourself” and remember “who you are”… that you are a son.

- What is the result of remembering that you are a son?

- You now have a choice about relationship. You can either walk alone (for fear, shame, or doubt) or return to your father.

- The danger is; we want to jump over the servant (no fun) to the son (out from under) to gain access to the Father.

· The desire to jump over the servant level will be detrimental as you try to receive the Fathers love.

· If you jump over the servant to the SON your relationship with the Father will be one of “legalism” – performance based rules of life.

- This is the level within which you must master your freedom to choose.

- This is where we learn to receive the unconditional love of the Father.

· This is where you find the answers you have always looked for.

- Sons are taught and learn to expect help from the Father.

**There are some here that are convinced that you are alone, that there is no one to help.

· Part of that is a remnant of an unwillingness to listen to others at the level of “servant”.

- This is a level where you understand that you are never alone.

- Love will never be withdrawn; despite betrayal, defiance or willful disobedience… you are loved without condition.

A Son experiences, through failure, an unconditional love - the love of the Father.

A Son experiences, through discipline, the love of the Father.

· Hebrews 12:6 – “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son and daughter whom he receives.”

- It is at this level of growing up in love that you understand there is nothing you can do to be “un-loved” by the Father.

- You realize that love is not tied to your performance.

- Even though the son is covered in shame he can always return to his Father:

The son will punish himself, expecting nothing much from the Father.

The Son can recognize his Father – but it is still hard to believe that there is acceptance and love despite “ME”.

STORY: Story of me calling up my father from Arizona when I was strung out and desperate.

- As a son you must draw on the experience with the Father that has demonstrated the Father’s mercy and help.

At the Son level of growing up in love;

- You will demonstrate what you have understood as a Son.

- Your ability to give and receive love from others is directly linked to your understanding of the love from the Father.

- Mastering this level; of freedom, and choices positions us to be a Father.

· The Son looks like his father.

· Jesus said, “If you have seen me, you have seen my Father.”

- It is at this level that we “know” what is in the heart of our “master” – (our Father).

· Jesus said (John 15:15) – “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

· Because of this “knowing” we now have access to maneuver through; mystery, offense, disease, pain, and loss.

Even with the understanding of the love of the Father for His Son – there is another level of that completes our IDENTITY and growing up in LOVE.

The final level of growing up in love is:

An HEIR –

(Galatians 4:7) – So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

- It is at this level that not only do I have choices, I have the capability to make choices, with confidence… despite the odds.

· Servant – is where I build trust.

· Son – is where choices and freedom are realized, where love is understood.

· Heir – I now choose to deposit my life… I choose to decide because I have an inheritance that cannot ever be taken away.

- At this level you come with strength to “give” not to “get”.

- I know how to lay my life down… I did that as a servant.

- I know how to take it back up and receive love… I did that as a son.

- I now have the security to walk in covenant as benefit for you.

- As a son… I am aware that I have a Father… – I know Him.

- As an heir – I am now asked to step into my destiny by right of covenant. Into an inheritance prepared by my Father but not placed before anyone else but ME.

Because of this “new thing” associated with being an heir –

- Warring against me are the components that are associated with an “Orphan spirit”

Jesus said – “I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.” (John 14:18)

· Past experiences, past hurt, past harm... I’m alone.

· The orphan spirit places importance on; control, manipulation, LIMITS, “I choose… I am not chosen.”

· An “orphan spirit” uses the disguise of “protection” as its rationale for decision making.

· The “orphan spirit” whispers, “You’re going to get hurt if you step out by faith and become venerable.”

· The voice says, “You have been abandoned and while you might be a son… you are illegitimate and when you die – everything dies with you.”

· “Be self-reliant” and independent – don’t trust others too much.

· “You should have been a boy/girl. Then my parents would have loved me.”

· My value is in what I do.

· I’ll never be what God wants me to be.

· I am the problem – when something is wrong it is my fault.

· I am stuck. “I can’t…”

· Those important to me will abandon me in difficult times and in critical events.

The truth as an heir is:

· God is with me always.

· I am accepted by my Father.

· My value is in who’s I am.

· I am exactly who God wants me to be.

· I am loveable and everything is not my fault.

NOTE: Since the BIBLE (truth) tells you that you are no longer a servant or a son but an “heir through God.” This is a battle with darkness… namely “The King of Tyre (Tire)”/// Satan.

Satan was cast out of heaven; the Fathers presence, love of the Father – Satan was the first “spiritual orphan”… and therefore the power behind the “orphan spirit”.

The message of the entire bible is one of a loving Father that desires his children to walk into their inheritance;

· The prophets spoke of this.

· The kings declared this.

· The men of God proclaimed this.

· But not until Jesus did anyone demonstrate this.

Out of our willingness to expose our lives, as an heir, to others, for their benefit, with the full understanding of the promise of God, “That we are never alone.” Are we truly able to LOVE.

- It is only out of this confidence that we are truly able to be “Grown up” in love.

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons… and if son’s then heirs of God.” (Romans 8:15,17)

Anonymous- Please pray for Becky Swanston, diagnosed with angiosarcoma of the breast- a very rare cancer. She just lost her brother to brain cancer two months ago, and she is overwhelmed and needs the healing and peace of Jesus. Thank you!

JAMES 4
Resolving Conflict

Now James makes an abrupt shift from the end of chapter 3 “And a harvest of peace is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

To 4:1 – What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you?

Again, we are considering what grown up faith looks like – what are the characteristics of a believer who has a mature faith?

For the most part how peaceable are brothers and sisters who are in the single digits of their maturity? For instance how peaceable are 5 and 7 year old siblings?

THE CAUSE OF CONFLICT:

WE ARE at war with ourselves:

Conflict comes out of our inner “Hedonon” (Hedonism) – sensual lusts, pleasure seeking.

- War is the fruit of illicit wants, lust (seeking things that are forbidden) brings about murder. Covetousness (materialism) results in frustration which leads to fights.

The ROOT is selfishness – lead to evil actions and evil prayers.

Covetousness (the last of the 10 commandments) can lead us to break all of the others; lie, steal, commit adultery, murder, dishonor parents, neglect the Sabbath, take God’s name in vain, idolatry, and, create another God.

V3 - “You do not have, because you do not ask GOD”… you ask and do not receive because you ask with wrong motives (“kakos” literally ‘evilly’)

- “But I prayed about it…” let me ask you a question…

- “How many of you like to be told what to do?”…making demands and directing God is not the same as being directed by Him… showing Him a way is not the same as follow where He leads.

The path that leads to life is narrow – often it is not the one we would choose to take… but I believe that’s the point:

If we want to offer a crown of GOLD it will be necessary to get off the beach.

- This is not saying that the reason you do not have the thing you lust or covet is because God is being a miser.

- Rather, it could be said with the inclusion of verse 4 that “a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” That when we do ask out of an illicit, evil, covetousness desire we are not asking God the Father for these things… instead we are asking the Spirit who entices people to become an “enemy of God”, namely Satan.

The issue here is that evil has the appearance of godliness but the fruit it produces is demonic;

o You pray for a relationship that will remove loneliness – to be answered by a relationship that requires you to sacrifice your body to maintain it.

o You ask for “relief” from the worries and stress of life – and it is answered through compromising your mind with the use of drugs.

o You ask for the job that will provide that earthly mansion you believe will give you significance – and it is answered with a job that takes you away from your family 5 out of 7 days.

WE ARE AT war with God:

Being a friend with the world – agreement with contrary spirits – Pride

V4 – being a friend with the world is being an enemy of God

- It begins with friendship.
- Then being “spotted” by the world (James 1:27)
- Then loving the world (1 John 2:15-17)
- Conforming to the world (Romans 12:2)
- Being condemned with the world (1 Cor 11:32)

Friendship with the world is often referred to “spiritual adultery” since we are married to Christ. In the OT this was the cause of Judah’s downfall.

V5 – Agreement with contrary spirits.

“He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us…” IS NOT a direct quotation of scripture.

- MOST likely he is referring to verse 6 – “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)

Verse 5 is difficult to reconcile for a number of reasons:

- Is the spirit the holy spirit or the human spirit?
- Is the spirit to be taken as the subject of the verb ‘yearns’ or its object?
- Is “envy” to be seen as ‘unrighteousness desire’ or as ‘righteous jealously’?

My opinion is that what James is speaking of is this:

- God cannot answer prayers asked with evil (selfish/worldly) intent because by doing so he would be contradicting Himself and the purpose of His spirit that has been placed within us.

V6 – PRIDE “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”

Pride is Satan’s great sin. God says depend on grace – Satan says depend on yourself.

Pride says, “be right” God says you have been made right… rely on my words.

The degree of your anger about “being right” equals the measure of your pride.

THE CURE FOR CONFLICT:

Thankfully James provides us with a synopsis of how to live lives that are peaceable with others (at least ones that resolve conflict appropriately) – this is not an exhaustive list but it’s at least a start:

There are 8 commandments to resolving conflict: which essentially tell us that,

We can’t stop loving people simply because we don’t agree with them.

Dietrich Bonheoffer said: “Appreciate the value of something even if you reject it.”

NOTE: Each of these are contingent upon us as individuals directing them inwardly. Not one tells us that the way to resolve conflict is by altering the behavior or spirit of another.

All 8 are in the aorist imperative tense – which is a call for a specific and definite decision. This must be a decision of will – a decision to prefer one action over another.

It’s sort of like making the decision between vanilla and chocolate ice cream – there is a choice… and each time ice cream is presented to us we must once again make a conscious choice.

Why? Wouldn’t it be easier if God forced us to prefer righteousness over evil?

- God could, but the play of our lives would be over.

God never usurps the will or the personality of the believer.

Omnipotence has its limits – “God is all powerful” but he cannot do all things.

He cannot make a round square or a married bachelor.
God can do anything… that can be done.

The world that God made is good… in which people are free to choose.

God would rather have the heart felt worship of the few instead of the robotic worship of the masses.

God cannot guarantee good - Freedom must be free - Could God make a world where people were free to choose and guarantee that everyone would choose the good he offers.

Sin is random - The effects of sin are visiting themselves randomly upon creation.

The world does not work right – Romans 8:20 – “Creation has been groaning for redemption” (the return to its rightful condition.

God allows us to CHOOSE then provides – he allows the broken creation to CHOOSE and inserts “post” event with the answer.

God is never perplexed

As believers we has said – CHOOSE – since He cannot violate Himself we must make daily decisions for righteousness

Submit – resist – draw near to God – Cleanse your hands – purify your hearts – be wretched and mourn – humble yourself – don’t speak evil.

- V7 - 1SUBMIT yourselves to God – a military term meaning “get into your proper rank” – to render obedience.

When a private acts like a general – conflict is inevitable – causalities will ensue.

Submission in the military is fulfilling the commands of a higher ranking officer – regardless of my preference. I may not think it right to perform a particular order – but I am still required to carry that order out (unless it violates God’s word).

The issue here is about “commitment” – uncommitted believers go MIA or are dishonorably discharged.

- V7b - 2RESIST the devil – “To stand in opposition to”

1 Peter tells us that to resist the devil it is necessary to stand firm in your faith.

Will power will not sustain your resistance to the devil. Only through a stronger belief in something contrary to evil will we be able to remain opposed to evil.

In other words – (aorist imperative tense) what is necessary is to make a decision of will to prefer truth over a lie.

- V8 - 3Draw near to God – “position oneself near so as to have an encounter” – the picture is of one approaching the alter of God to offer a sacrifice. Our lives are to be sacrifices to God.

The more we are like God the nearer we are to God:

For instance: AW TOZER - If I have our dog in my lap and my wife is 20 feet away – I am nearer to my wife than my Dog, because my Dog is unlike me – I am more like my wife; physically and spiritually.

- V8b - 4Cleanse your hands – an OT picture of the removal of sinful practices.

Often it is necessary to physically remove obstacles that are preventing resolution to conflicts.

We must physically position our lives so that we are not hindering the process of resolution.

- V8c - 5Purify your hearts – because the heart is the seat of faith (what we believe) this essentially says, “Stop believing lies… start believing the truth.”

Again, this is in the aorist imperative tense which is a directive to make a definitive decision.

Believing truth is not about “feeling” like it. Rather, it is willingly choosing to believe, to “honor the point” despite how I feel.

“If God gives you a watch, are you honoring Him more by asking Him what time it is or by simply consulting the watch?”

The value you place on the word of God will determine the power you receive from the word of God.

- V9 - 6/7Be Wretched and mourn – be sorrowful for sin, turn from sin, and make restitution for sin.

Be sober and not arrogant. Admit your fault in the conflict.

V9 – How many of you have ever laughed at sin? Yeah… that is what verse 9 is all about: “Turn your laughing into mourning” –

- V10 - 8Humble yourself – humility is not making less of yourself – humility is making more of others.

This is essentially the beatitudes of Jesus: Matthew 5:3-11

- V11 - 9Do not speak evil against one another –

“It’s not about being RIGHT – it’s about being FREE.”

It is for freedom that Christ has set you free. Galatians 5:1

It’s your choice –

Kimberly L.- Steve Taylor - colleague 64, had hemmorhagic stroke, non-responsive. No kids, 1 estranged brother. He's loved by thousands - leads thousands...but does not know Christ. I'm in pain for not witnessing.

David V. - Friend Brenda Bingham is leading mission trip to Uganda July 14th for 2 weeks. Pray that they are welcomed and God revealed through them.

Matt - Wisdom for decisions. Financial blessing wanted. I would like some relief of pressure.

Eli P. - Favor at court hearing in Baltimore. Protected travel. Continued guidance in house hunting. Blessings of peace, protection, wisdom and favor over my household, my wife, my marriage.

Karlow Family - We will become business owners this week and will start our transition to a second home in Florida. We are at peace in our spirits but it is alot in the natural. Prayers for the family of Leland Shores- he was 45

Leland Shores, a dear friend of ours died in Uganda about 12 hrs ago. Supposedly he went to hospital with pneumonia, and they said he had tuberculosis. His organs shut down and he died shortly after. We rcvd a call an hour ago. His wife's name is Carol. They had been married two years. He was with Andrew Womack ministries in Uganda and SLC supported his mission. He encouraged us so much as we started the church and he poured into our leadership, spoke at our men's breakfast and gave the mssg at our Christmas service. Leland was at our wedding and i still remember his call from africa 48 hrs bf graysons brain surgery to tell me he was going to be alright bc thousands of ugandans were lifting him up in prayer as we spoke. He and Carol had plans to be here in the usa tomorrow and at our church on the 17th. His message was "unconditional love" and "discipleship." The Ugandan people are praying for him to be raised from the dead.

Prayers for Bruce and Rhonda P. - my brother's family. They lost their grandson Logan. He was 16 yrs old. He unfortunately took his own life this past Friday morning. So pray for my brother's family because they are grieving very much.

CP- Prayers for high cholesterol. Good cholesterol is really good, but bad one is high. Combined score is high. It's generational and I speak against that in the name of Jesus. My mother, and both brothers have high cholesterol and are on medication for it. I am eating a lot of fruits and vegetables and protein and incorporating more exercise for next three months, then Dr. wants to see if it has come down. Please pray that i would continue to eat the way God intended me to and I would have the strength and make the time to exercise at least every other day. In Jesus name, amen!

Anonymous- Pray with me that i can speak God's word over myself and my needs rather than letting fear come out of my mouth. To me this means I have the measure of faith I need to meet every trial and obstacle. Not too much, not too little faith, but the measure of faith I need to be an overcomer and victorious.

Kerry P.- Thank you for your prayers for Tanya. There was a breakthrough this week as her mom had to go tot he ER and therefore had to see doctors. They found a bunch wrong with her and treated her. She's still depressed, but it may get her better.

PRAYER:

Father God, we praise you for the gift of the Spirit that connects us to every follower of Jesus. Continue to strengthen our "family of grace" at SLC. 6.5.11 Partial Faith - James 2

CHAPTER 2

Again, James is writing to a church in it’s infancy. He is reminding them that for the gospel of the Kingdom to advance they need to mature in their faith… GROW UP!

James has laid the foundation of a mature faith; now he embarks into developing his argument through practical examples that believers encounter daily.

Read James 2:1-13

- If we engage in the sin of being a respecter of persons we are not applying wisdom that is from above – instead we are applying man’s wisdom.

Paul tells Timothy that a gathering of believers will not survive if partiality is shown in administering appointments within the gathering.

Partiality is an unfair bias of one thing or person compared with another… favoritism… bias…

The picture James paints is of two believers in a dispute in a court of fellow believers. Jewish law required that each party sit at the same level or stand. It also demanded that if one were rich they either dress the poorer man as they are dressed or dress “down” to match the dress of the poorer man. Often the “judge” would sit with his back to the two plaintiffs as they spoke their argument and defense.

The root principal that James is touching upon is the Kingdom principal of Honor: Extending honor asks that we forgo our preconceived ideas of people and have an impartial regard for them.

The problem with PARTIALITY is that it positions our hearts against redemption.

- If my heart is biased against anyone, if I am un-accepting of another, by default I must be biased and un-accepting of myself.

- If there is uncertainty in regard to the significance of others based on appearance, then I will be uncertain about my significance.

- If redemption is conditional (by how one appears) then I cannot have assurance of my redemption.

PARTIALITY is grace-less. If we are partial we are engaging in a behavior that is inconsistent with what we profess to believe – namely that Christ died for all.

- We are anti-Christ as Jesus declared, “whoever believes in me shall not perish but have eternal life.”

- Partiality sets the foundation for legalism; a tradition or code of conduct not spoken of or demonstrated in the life of Jesus Christ.

The issue with legalism is that the foundation is ever changing and the structure fails from generation to generation. Because the bricks are man made rules and regulations – the mortar is fear and materialism.

For example: the seat belt law… why is it that I need a law to force me to preserve my life? I have no regard for my life.

With Grace – the foundation is the cornerstone of Christ and is unshakable… for example: The VALUE of each life as given by God – including my own. (If I don’t value my life I cannot value yours – love neighbor as you love yourself…) You and I are to build upon grace so that the next generation can begin upon our APEX.

PARTIALITY is defiant to truth, “I have already made up my mind and have an answer about who you are… don’t bother me with the truth.”

The people in the city of Nazareth (LUKE 4:21-22 and 29-30) succumb to PARTIALITY and because of that Jesus could do only a few miracles there because of their unbelief – “Unbelief” is an unwillingness to accept TRUTH.”

- By Jesus’ example we see that it is only within a culture of honor that sets the atmosphere for an ongoing lifestyle of miracles.

- Partiality is a lie I agree with that tells me it will prevent me from being deceived: I realize that no one wants to be gullible – we have all been hurt.

- So we establish ‘categories’ with people based on who we think they are.

BUT… “If I believe that establishing categories can prevent me from being deceived, I have already been deceived.”

Jesus is described as “having no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 53:2) In other words - if we based our determination of spirituality on appearance - we would have missed the Savior.

Learning to recognize the presence of God on another’s life is one of the most important abilities for believers. So how do we discern God’s presence or lack of presence upon another person’s life?

- Turn to Galatians 5:18-24 - are they loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, merciful and do they demonstrate self-control?

For believers to be united it is necessary to do away with partiality and replace it with a spirit of honor. Some of us here today have been crying out to God for a breakthrough and God has heard your prayer. However, he has placed it in a package that you are unwilling to receive – because of the unclean spirit of “Partiality”.

James in simply noting the tendency of people to have regard for certain people over others based on the superficial.

- The church (according to James) is judging as the world does, not as God does.

- “For the LORD your God is God of gods… who is not partial and takes no bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17)

PARTIALITY establishes the measure with which we approach every other area of our life.

In the Kingdom of God each of us sets the “measure” – “For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” (Matthew 7:2). In other words… if we show partiality based on appearance that is the ‘measure’ with which our life is established.

Not character.
Not behavior.
Not kindness or mercy.
Not the fruit associated with God’s Spirit.

The problem is that I will not be able to arrive at a place where my measure equates to heaven. WHY? Because any-time I have a measure other than GRACE I have succumb to the spirit of legalism and death. Because according to the bible. “The letter (law) kills but it is the Spirit that gives life” (2 Corinthians 3:6). Because the spirit of legalism is contrary to the spirit of grace. Therefore, when I am partial based on appearance (or a preconceived idea) of someone (group of people) I am anti-grace… meaning I am anti-Christ.

Partiality can kill:

Over the course of years I have encountered parents, whose children battle addictions, that when confronted with the truth about the addiction reply, “I had no idea they were addicted, I never saw any issues.”

Really: the 3 DUI’s, missing credit cards and cash, sleeping until 3:00 in the afternoon, weight loss and radical mood swings never tipped you off? To which they reply… “Well now that you mention it – that did seem sort of odd.”

Unfortunately one of those parents told me of “their surprise that it was so bad” as I was preparing to perform their daughters funeral.

This is one side of the sin of partiality: being blind to truth and it has an element of denial associated with it – it is having bias to one party, inclined to favor one part in a cause or circumstance.

The other side of the sin of partiality deals with forming a judgment based on superficial conditions and not intrinsic conditions.

In other words: seeing with the natural and determining the condition of that person based on a familiar spirit that is associated with what is seen. If I determine the condition of a person by their appearance I can “miss” the outcries of a person in depression or desperation. The pendulum swings both ways; from the “well dressed” being perceived as being “blessed” and the “destitute” as being cursed.

Partiality allows comparison – it is for CHILDREN because it provides the environment of comparison v 10-13

Have you ever heard children argue… Mine is best because it is the most expensive – or mine is the fastest because it looks the fastest… They form an idea of themselves based on “THEIR PERCEPTION” as compared to others.

What is the danger in comparison?

I am able to discount my sin by comparing my life to others – instead of judging with the true judgment that God has established for my life.

“Well… at least I’m not as bad as they are.”

Partiality does away with grace and establishes law – by creating a set of rules that equate to holiness: NOTE: where there is no grace… law ensues. Legalism never works. Rules will never change the human condition – the law is an external attempt at reformation.

“But the new covenant has been placed into our minds and hearts so that we may know the LORD.”

Partiality is detrimental to our destiny –

The spirit of partiality sets the course for our life – instead of the Spirit of God.

What do I mean? If I am partial to people who live in a large house but am called by God to go into the mission field in the Amazon – I must now breakdown the stronghold of materialism and undo the curse I have placed upon my life by being partial to what “success” is. Part of the reason Jesus is desired is because through His life we see a representation of a person who perfectly fulfilled His God ordained destiny and call. He was impartial – he judged with the true judgment – he was not a respecter of persons…

Seeing Faith Clearly 5-29-11

So up until this point in the book of James we have been encouraged to:
mature in our faith
see trials from a proper perspective,
get wisdom
and recognize the difference between “tests” and “temptations”.

Now James embarks to tells us how to practice and apply that maturity in our lives:

Essentially James is saying – “Now that I’ve explained what grown up faith is emotionally and spiritually – let’s get practical – let’s see what your faith looks like.”

As parents – how do we recognize that our children are mature? We give them an opportunity to demonstrate their maturity. Hopefully they have heard what is expected and have seen BELIEF demonstrated in our lives, now it’s time for them to put into practice what has been taught.

Our father in heaven is no different. One of the primary ways to know if someone is mature is to see how they NAVIGATE through a test because actions are the true reflection of our belief.

Trials and tests define who we are:

Are you willing to do what necessary despite what you feel or will you compromise?

“Maturity is knowing that it is necessary to DO what is necessary.”

Can you govern yourself? When no one else is watching do you have the discipline to do what is true? Do you finish? “The end of the matter is better than the beginning.” Are you able to complete what you start? Are you ambivalent? Do you succumb to that which is culturally popular. Are you inflexible? Are your actions are based on ‘what has always been done’. Remember, the bible reveals God it does not restrain God.

If a culture becomes ambivalent the result will be a generation that does not know God.

A case STUDY: Judges 1:27 – 2:7 – 2:10 – 2:11-13

These verses show us that when a culture of people cannot govern themselves and complete the task God has presented to them the result of that compromise is a generation that is unable to recognize truth and therefore they are unable to recognize and know God.

If a culture becomes inflexible and is intolerant to practices of faith that are not within the tradition of man the result will be missed revelation.

The case study of the nation of Israel… the Jews. The Jewish nation missed Jesus because they were unable to remove the veil of religious activities and see. The hope of the nations came in a "package" that they were not prepared to receive.

That is why Belief is not about RELIGION instead it is about the SPIRIT that has placed wisdom in the hearts of true believers.

Practically: In the midst of a trial is a person defiant or are they teachable?

Be Teachable:

V19-21 – ‘be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger…’

“Quick to Hear” - In other words, be willing to listen (to what God is trying to teach you in the midst of a trial).

If I do not ‘hear’ what God is trying to say – I will not learn the lesson He is trying to teach me.” To hear it is necessary to put aside the former things – again, new wine must be placed in new wine-skins. Yet, it is necessary to be mature in your belief so as to not be ambivalent over issues that are important. Just like when someone “talks over” another and cannot hear what the other person is trying to say – so it is with the things of God.

To that point the next trait a person with mature faith demonstrates is that they are;

“Slow to speak” - “Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God… (Ecclesiastes 5:2)

- If I am not teachable I will not listen – because I will not listen I cannot give an answer.

How many of us have asked the question, “How are you doing?” With the response being, “Not much.” Obviously that person did not listen and was quick to speak a standard response. I realize this is a non-essential example but think about the ramifications if we approach God in the same way. God is prepared to provide a new revelation and we approach it with the same 'pat' answer we have always used.

PROVERBS 13:3 – “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.”

It’s worth noting – in the midst of a trial vows are often made haphazardly –

“If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not delay in fulfilling it… for you have voluntarily vowed to the LORD you God what you have promised with your mouth.” (Deuteronomy 23:21.23)

“Mature people watch what they think and because of that, they do not need to watch what they say.”

Finally, mature people are “Slow to become angry” - A person who vents their anger and frustration in the midst of a trial is seeking personal gratification – the bible says that anger cannot produce the righteousness of God.

- (21) A person who is teachable receives the ‘implanted’ (em-phy-ton) literally ‘engrafted’ word. When a plant is ‘engrafted’ into another plant – it takes on the characteristics of the primary life force. The purpose of engrafting is increase reproduction and sustainability.

Another opportunity for us to practice and apply a mature faith is our view of religion:

V22-27 Think rightly about religion:

The people with the most theories / theology have the most religious agendas and in the absence of experience bad theology is formed. “Experience is attained by applying what we believe.” If the word has been implanted we will do what God asks because our nature has been changed. If we hear and do not do the word we succumb to the delusion of creating an image of ourselves that is greater than the true reflection. Merely “knowing” and reciting scripture does not qualify as understanding in the Kingdom of God.

We live in a culture that values concept and principal over experience and because of that it is common to believe that we are qualified for advancement simply because we “know what to do”. How many of you realize that simply “knowing” how to perform heart surgery is not the same as ‘understanding’ how to perform heart surgery.

“In the Kingdom experience is what provides understanding – in the world it is the opposite.”

It is only when we take revelation and embark into experience that we gain understanding.

“PERFECT LAW” James 1:25) – is a way of describing the application of God’s love to life’s circumstances. Religion is perfect when it is not focused on “right” or “wrong” but rather what is true. A test case… is lying a good thing? Imagine if a woman came into a room in which you were sitting and said to you, "There is a man chasing me who wants to kill me, I'm going to go over there and hide in the closet, please don't tell him where I am!" Of course you sit there in shock for a moment but as you begin to gain your reason a man does walk into the room with a knife and asks you, "Have you seen a woman recently? I'm going to kill her!"

In this case lying is the true thing to do. Hear me; I am not saying that lying is acceptable. You will give an answer for your actions. what I am trying to communicate with this story is that we as believers must mature and move away from "right" and "wrong" and instead concentrate on what is "true" for the building up of the body of Christ.

V 25 - A mature person “looks intently” – literally “stoops down to get a closer look” at themselves. Am I applying the ‘perfect law’ in every area of my life? Do I create a false image of who I am?

V 25 – the “Perfect law” provides “the law of liberty” which seems like a paradox – how can law bring freedom? Because God is immutable (never changing) we don’t need to wonder if something is true or not true… we have been provided His word and His Spirit. Because I am secure in truth I am at liberty from worrying if my actions are right or wrong – I KNOW TRUE.

V 26-27

RECEIVING REVELATION

Our response to revelation is what allows us to “see ourselves clearly”.

The 1st indication of whether or not revelation has been received is by our speech (V26). The word used here for ‘religious’ is (thres-kos) refers to external observances of religion.

The issue of the tongue (speech) is expounded upon in chapter 3 but for now consider this:
I am deceiving myself if I believe in my heart that my external observances of religion count… if I will not control my speech.

- If I lie (do not tell the whole truth)
- If I slander or defame
- If I am sarcastic
- If I use vulgarity.
- If my language is different at home or at the office than it is at a gathering of believers.

The 2nd indication of whether or not revelation has been received is by our actions. (V27) I am deceiving myself if I believe in my heart that my actions are not a representation of what I truly believe. Mature faith cares for the “poor” and it also is “not polluted by the world” – meaning it does not seek security from the world. Because a mature faith does not love the world it is easy to give freely. In addition, a mature faith behaves in a manner that corresponds to what is proclaimed by our speech. It is not Hypocritical.

So what does it take to achieve the goal of a ‘mature faith’? Stand with confidence in the midst of trials. Know the difference between temptation and tests. See yourself clearly; by observing your speech and you actions and apply the truth to your life… regardless of how you feel.

Anonymous - Please give me the strength to be able to do my job efficiently and effectively even though my boss makes it difficult. Help me have the grace to forgive his anger and not let his selfishness effect me. Please keep me and my co-workers safe from his wrath.

Anonymous - Please pray for my husband, our two boys and me. My husband is living with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He has been getting progressively weaker and is in pain. He is feeling more discouraged and fearful. He wanted to come to church today, but felt too weak and in too much pain. My boys are confused about what is happening to their dad. They are 7 and 4. I ask for healing, love, clear focus on God in our lives, and wisdom as to how to proceed. How to talk with our boys, how and when to plan and make changes in our living situation, work circumstances, etc. Pray that I will stay focused on Him and not turn to alcohol, but will in fact turn away from trying to numb and avoid the pain. Thank you, with love.

Steve D. - As Bryn and I go on a trip with my dad, step mom, brother and sister (Jay, Barb, Spencer and Jess Dubell), that we would be God's shining light and have the opportunity to share God's word. They are not saved. Thx!

CP - I'm praying that my children Grayson (10) and Isabella (7) would get along!! Summer is coming! They have been fighting a lot - we are "struggling" to be patient during this time - we are praying for peace in their relationship - that they would honor one another in all that they do. Theresa, I remembered you sent a message to Caitlin and Jacob once about bullying. I just wanted to ask for your prayers. Caitlin has been cyberbullied and picked on and last night she tried to commit suicide. I am on my way to the hospital in seattle to see her, they sent us home last night and we can only come during certain hours as she is getting therapy. Could you please ask family to pray for her. We almost didn't get help in time. We need prayers. Cait is an honor student, a volunteer and an amazing girl. Bullying is bad just like you said. We need prayers, Cait feels so alone and helpless against the bullies that she wanted to not live. Please ask for prayers for her. Thanks you T, Heather

5-15-11 James "Passing the test of Temptation"

Week 3 – Ever Growing faith – passing the test of temptation

Do you know the difference between a test and a temptation? If God is good why do we go through trials in life? Why does it seem like when I need God most, I can’t hear His voice?”

These are all questions every believer has asked at some point in the life.

Thankfully God has not left the answers a mystery… but receiving those answers asks that I have a faith that is mature and growing. It is vital to mature in our faith because we leave an inheritance of faith to the next generation. Our ceiling should be the next generations floor.

So how do we pass the test of temptation?

- Need to understand blessing
- What to do when we can’t sense God’s presence
- Realize God cannot do everything
- The difference between testing and temptation
- And accept mystery.

1:12-15

V12 – “Blessed” means having supernatural power working in your favor. So we could read this “Supernatural power works in your favor when you remain steadfast under trial.” WHY? Because “Complaining is to the devil what praise is to God.” A mature person does not complain in the midst of a trial. A mature person does not place conditions on God’s purpose.

We see this stated in the book of Job, “Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil? (Job 2:10)

How are trials a BLESSING?

- Trials are an opportunity that God gives to us because He trusts us and has provided the necessary tools for us to overcome.

- Trials create the crying out to God that creates the atmosphere that attracts His Spirit to invade our circumstance with the answer.

- Trials are designed to bring us to the throne-room where we are not overwhelmed.

Again, “Ever growing faith” asks that we trust the established principals God has provided, then we physically position ourselves and prepare our mind.

- Learning in the midst of a trial can be done… but, it is not the best way.

The goal of every believer should be to establish the principals while we are in God’s presence… then we stand and advance. Think about it, the time to place batteries in the flash-light is before it goes completely dark.

1:12 – “remain steadfast” – (endures) –

- A mature person does not fall away in the midst of trials –

- Remember, God will give you enough grace to get through the moment.

In a trial if I am anxious or worrisome that is an indication to me that I have stepped out of the grace of the moment. The truth is, trials can seem lonely – as if God’s presence has lifted off your life…

So what are we to do when we can’t sense God’s presence?

There are times when God’s presence lifts from our lives – but like everything God allows there is a purpose – and it is intended for our good.

A case study: The story of Hezekiah

Hezekiah was an amazing King of Israel – most commentators conclude that Hezekiah brought about the 2nd golden age of the nation of Israel.

- He banished idolatrous worship.
- Reinstated worship of YWEH.
- Brought about social reforms in literacy and economic responsibility.
- And oversaw the compilation of the biblical books Isaiah, Proverbs, Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes.

His passion and commitment to God is no more evident that the fact that Hezekiah was granted 15 more years by the LORD because of his passionate prayer reminding God of how faithful he had been.

PICK UP 2 Chronicles 32:27…

In this we find Hezekiah positioned to demonstrate his faith, like he had done before, instead he succumbs to a selfish motive of comparison and because of that his heart was revealed. So what was in Hezekiah’s heart?

Isaiah 39:5-8

Hezekiah essentially says, "It's OK with me that our nation will be overrun and my children will become prisoners of our enemies. I'll be dead anyway."

Hezekiah abandoned God.

- When I can’t sense God’s presence I must be mature enough to rely on the established principals I have learned while in His presence.

Now a word of warning in regard to trials being “allowed by God” (Hebrews)
“How could a loving God allow trials?”

- God allows trials not in the sense that he ‘approves’ of them. God does not directly ‘make’ a trial or test. He simply uses the effects of a sinful world for His purpose.

Omnipotence has its limits – “God is all powerful” but he cannot do all things.

He cannot make a round square or a married bachelor.
God can do anything… that can be done.

The world that God made is good… in which people are free to choose.

God would rather have the genuine worship of the few instead of the robotic worship of the masses.

God cannot guarantee good - Freedom must be free - Could God make a world where people were free to choose and guarantee that everyone would choose the good he offers.

Sin is random - The effects of sin are visiting themselves randomly upon creation.

The world does not work right – Romans 8:20 – “Creation has been groaning for redemption” (the return to its rightful condition.

God allows then provides – he allows the broken creation and inserts “post” event and provides the answer to the trial.

But what about the verse that says, “I am the LORD creating calamity…” he created a world where people were free to choose, so in essence he did not 'create' calamity - God created the world in which there is calamity.

It is impossible to believe that God is good when you equate Him with the things we are told to come against as believers.

1:13 – Mature people know the difference between temptation and testing.

- Temptations only result in sin if acted upon– temptation is the suggestion to fulfill a God given desire in a god forsaken way. On the other hand, testing if handled properly brings about a ‘good and perfect gift’ (v17).

The gift that trials produce is maturity – because your faith has moved from an “idea” to “belief”. The only way for an idea to advance to a belief is if it is proven, the only way to prove faith is by going through trials.

Temptation is not part of a test – rather temptation is our sin nature’s response to the test.

The same root word here for trial (pi-ras-mos) is also found in 1 Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”
You are not terminally unique.

Why is it important to know the difference between tests and temptations? Because if I assert that God tempts believers to do evil I have made God responsible for my failure.

1:14-15 –
Essentially James is saying to those who would say, “It’s not my fault…”

“Grow-up and take responsibility for your behavior”

- I am responsible for my sin… I cannot ‘blame’ God for falling into temptation.

“After we receive Christ we do not have the option of saying, I’m only human.”

I've heard people say, “But I don’t have a choice.” – not true, it may not be the choice you want… but it is a choice nevertheless. Remember, “It is for freedom Christ has set us free.” (Gal 5:1)

Others have said, “You don’t know what I’m going through.” – correct, but I am mature enough to know that regardless of what you are dealing with… sin is never the proper response.

James now concludes the “testing and trial” section

1:16-17 –

The first truth in James conclusion is a statement about the immutability of God.

- “…there is no variation of shadow due to change.”

A mature person understands that God is good – period.

- Anything evil is not from God and we are to stand in opposition to it.

- God does not afflict people to “teach them a lesson”.

- God does not “need another angel in heaven.”

- God is not willing that any should perish but that all should have eternal life.

So why do people perish? I don’t know…but a mature person is able to live in the mystery of godliness and accept questions without answers being confident in the truth that God is good.

ACCEPTING MYSTERY

A mature person realizes that, “If I want peace that surpasses understanding I must give up my right to understand.”

A mature person will gladly live in the midst of an unexplainable mystery before believing a lie to feel better about their circumstance.

- If I die tonight by being hit by a drunk driver – don’t console yourself that it was God’s will that I died that way.

Why? Because you have just made a drunk driver the authority of the universe.

Death is not God’s will… it never was. Death is the result of sin, sin is not of God, therefore we cannot abdicate the universe to drunk drivers running a signal and receive comfort from that.

- The only solace we are left with is this final statement from James about trials and temptations.

V18 – Believers are the first-fruit of a new and sinless creation… believers are not sinners saved by grace. Sin comes from the will other than God’s.

Chris G.- Father, I thank you for all you have done to fill our lives with love during such an incredible challenge. We love seeing you at work and we seek to count all trials as blessings. I pray the Holy Spirit remains overtly present in our daily lives and guides us in all our actions. In your son Jesus's name.

Karen H. - Shaun is in the hospital and may lose his toe due to diabetic complications. I filed for divorce. I had to cancel the hearing due to his hospitalization. I have heard all of his hospital bed promises before and I don't trust him.

CP- For my friend Daisy - they desire to sell their home in the Colony and move closer to their kid's school; husband's work and place of worship. They moved here two years ago and left everything familiar behind. They have pressed in, and have remained strong and faithful knowing that God will provide in their time of need. We are in agreement that their home will sell quickly this time (last time it took 14 months). Also for Daisy's little sister who is 16 and has moved in with them and she will remain with them. Pray for provision of expenses with this addition to their family. For their marriage- that it will remain strong through all of this, and that God would bring a Godly couple along side them to walk with them in this journey. In Jesus's name.

Prayer warriors- I need your help. Some of you may remember that back in November of 2010, I met a hispanic woman at Children's hospital during Grayson's routine MRI. Her son was there for testing of autism in the next room over from us. I struck up a conversation with her through the curtains and tried to help as the Lord leaded. Ended up that a few of us pooled our resources and "adopted" her and her family for Christmas, and we were able to meet some of her immediate financial and emotional needs. I have kept in contact with her throughout the spring as we knew she was having difficulties with her children being alone with their father (her ex husband).

Well, this morning I received a frantic call from her and the news is not good. Long story short, sexual abuse has been discovered between the father and 8 year old daughter. CPS is now involved, and has allowed for the visitation rights to be removed between the girl and father. She has paid a lot of legal fees for this to occur and is broke. Her dilemma now is that her other 3 children are still required to have visitation with their father. She is distraught at this point.

Please join us in prayer as we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help resolve this issue. My heart breaks for this family and these children. While the law is there to help and protect, there are obviously some holes in the system (in my opinion) that truly can only be closed through the work of the God and through His people (you and I).

My next step is to have a friend of mine call her who speaks fluent Spanish to confirm that all i heard, I understood correctly. I will then try and contact a family Hispanic lawyer on our baseball team and see if she can offer any guidance or gratis work. Please pray that this will be resolved as soon as possible; that God will show up for this family in a supernatural way; that doors will open and she will know that it is straight from God; and that these children will be protected by God's Holy angels.

I will update you as i know more.

Robin & her husband are near & dear to my heart. They are faithful servants who are devoted to fulfilling God's call on their lives to care for orphans.

her son Chris stepped outside his home this morning to go get coffee - he collapsed and died. (he has visited summit various times when we were at addison event center- has 2 lil ones)mp is at baylor plano now with family.

Amy D.- My mentor and collegeauge office mate, Aggie- husband died last night. They were such a huge part of our church, and they were the cutest couple and loved God more than anyone, and were just solid. I am so sad for Aggie, even though they had a great life together and he was 82. They are like my second parents. Prayers for their family appreciated.

C.P.- Hi there, just a heads up (no pun intended!) that our sweet boy, Grayson will have his next MRI on Monday of next week. We will come get him around the time he normally goes to lunch: 11:30ish. Thanks ahead of time for all the precious prayers!

P.s. Please pray that not only do they find nothing in the original spot, but also that they find nothing regarding his neck muscle pain that has gone on for a couple of months. We took him into his pediatric doc yesterday aftn and he really seems to think it's muscular but nurse Janet was uneasy with how much he's been complaining. His surgeon called to follow up last night and they will take an extra special look at that area.

The Blessed Life What does it mean to be ‘blessed’? Generally when someone says they are blessed it is due to a circumstance in the world working out in their favor… that the result was ‘good’ and not ‘bad’. There is a fable that provides the truth regarding "good" or "bad". A farmer had one old horse that he used for tilling his fields. One day the horse escaped into the hills and when all the farmer’s neighbors heard about it, they sympathized with the old man over his bad luck. “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?” said the farmer. A week later, the horse returned with a herd of wild horses from the hills and this time the neighbors congratulated the farmer on his good luck. “Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?” said the farmer. Then, when the farmer’s son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone agreed that this was very bad luck. Not the farmer, who replied, “Bad Luck? Good luck? Who knows?” Some weeks later, the army marched into the village and forced every able-bodied young man to go fight in a bloody war. When they saw that the farmer’s son had a broken leg, they let him stay. Everyone was very happy at the farmer’s good luck. - We are not called to determine good or bad – rather, we are asked to determine true. · Honestly, whenever we determine good or bad we have established the end of a matter. By establishing the end we remove the eternal. By removing the eternal we have removed God and by removing God we are left without hope. So what is a life that is blessed? Is it a life in which every day is sunny? You know what they call that … a desert! Let’s go with this working definition: “A blessed life is a life filled with divine coincidences in which you have supernatural power working for you. You have favor because God’s presence is both in AND upon your life as a result of how you handle revelation.” A blessed person may or may not be wealthy by the world’s standards By contrast, a life that is ‘cursed’ has supernatural power working against you. God’s presence may be “in” but it is not “upon” your life due to the mishandling of revelation. Meaning: There is blessing and favor that is untapped because of the way revelation (truth) is handled. You may or may not walk around oppressed however there is the conviction that revelation is not being handled appropriately. Again, this person may or may not be wealthy by the world’s standards. “God’s presence is in me for my sake – but it is upon me for yours.” Being blessed is not something that “just happens” – God would not place eternity in the atmosphere of chance. Rather blessing is found in process so when we have a mindset that only considers the outcome of a matter we have erected a barrier to living a blessed life. It's unwise to pick and choose what determines a blessing. Most people say, “Show me the baby don’t tell me about the labor…." But how many of you know that having a baby is NOT the end of the matter? Having supernatural power working for you begins with circumstance: How I see circumstance determines the system with which I will broker revelation – how I choose to “see” reality (from an eternal perspective or an immediate perspective). The power of God’s prophetic word manifests in proportion to our response to circumsance. Here is the progression: - How I handle my circumstances determines my revelation. - How I handle revelation determines my breakthrough. - How I handle breakthrough determines my blessing (supernatural power working for me). - How I handle my blessing (supernatural power working for me) determines my increase and favor. This process is repeated over again throughout scripture: For instance – Mark 8:7 - Jesus took the fish and loaves and blessed them and they increased (he brought the supernatural to the natural). He considered the circumstance and progressed through process. - He saw the potential in the insignificant. - There is a seed of Kingdom explosion in every circumstance. 2 Samuel 5:19-21 David did not consider his recent victory as a sanction to embark into other battles without seeking revelation from God. He regarded the circumstance and again, progressed through process. Jesus increased in favor with God and man – Luke 2:52 · Favor with man was due to the way he handled circumstances that brought – revelation. That revelation brought breakthrough (in their lives) – because of the breakthrough in their lives – that gave Him favor with man. Most of us can increase in favor with man… if we “help” them we gain their favor. · How he handled the revelation (truth) brought increased blessing – the way he handled blessing brought favor from the Father (how he handled what was placed in His life each day) – the more he handled blessing correctly the greater the manifestation. Increased blessing (supernatural power working in your favor) is determined by how you broker circumstance and the revelation today. So How do you see 'today'?

Sumer G.- A friend of mine from high school just found her daughter who is 11 has to have brain surgery to remove a cluster of blood vessels that is causing seizures and migraines. I want to pray for the dr's and for the family for comfort and peace during this difficult time.

Angie and Peter B.- Angie and Peter have been trying to have a baby with no success. They have done four in-vitro's with no success. She is devastated. Pray that God will give them a child.

Jeff and Molly- Please pray for Karissa. She is 18 and running with the world. Her father has abandoned her and she has become self destructive. She needs love and the Lord!

Also that he would start to operate in his destiny and be able to witness and pray for others in the jail while he is there.

Also for Timothy that as he faces what's upcoming- that oppression would be broken in Jesus name and he would hear Gods's voice clearly speaking His will for choices.

Anonymous- My mom has had the third set of x-rays, and there is something there. She has been referred to a pulmonologist. It's been quite awhile since we've sent an update on Brett. He is feeling great, doing well, and really enjoying playing baseball! We would appreciate your prayers, though. Tomorrow morning at 8 am, March 24, Brett will have his third routine follow-up CT Scan, since the completion of his treatment last July. Please join us in praying for a completely clear scan. We'll send a results update as soon as we get word but until then, please lift Brett in prayer. May God keep him healthy and cancer-free!
